What is Companion Mode?

By default, Wear OS enforces a strict rule to save battery: only one app can track your health metrics in the background at a time. If you use an app like Strava or Google Fit to track your run and you leave that app on your active watch screen, the OS will block HapticZone from reading your heart rate in the background.

Enabling Companion Mode (a Pro feature) switches HapticZone to read the raw hardware sensors directly, completely bypassing this restriction.

(Note: You only need this if you want HapticZone hidden in the background while another app is visible. If you leave HapticZone as the active app on your screen, standard mode works perfectly alongside Strava!)

Do I need my phone with me to run?

No! Once you set up your ranges, HapticZone runs 100% standalone on your Wear OS watch. You can leave your phone at home. (Note: Audio Routing and the Live Dashboard do require the phone to be nearby).

Will this drain my watch battery?

In Standard Mode, HapticZone uses Google's Wear Health Services API. This offloads the heavy lifting to the watch's low-power co-processor, meaning it drains battery at the exact same rate as a native Google Fit or Fitbit workout.

If you enable Companion Mode, the app must bypass the OS and access the raw hardware sensors. This requires more processing power and will drain the battery faster (expect roughly 10-15% drain per hour of tracking depending on your watch).

How does the Hands-Free Launch work?

Simply hold your watch button or raise your wrist and say, "Hey Google, open HapticZone." The app will launch immediately, allowing you to hit start without fumbling with menus while you stretch.

🛠️ Troubleshooting & Tips

Not seeing your heart rate?

Wear OS is strict about health data. If you see "---" on your dashboard, go to your watch's Settings > Apps > HapticZone > Permissions and ensure "Sensors" or "Physical Activity" is allowed.

Why isn't my heart rate updating when I leave the app?

If you are running HapticZone as your sole tracking app (or leaving it active on the screen), make sure Companion Mode is turned OFF so it uses the highly optimized standard tracking. If you are running another fitness tracker concurrently and placing HapticZone in the background, make sure Companion Mode is turned ON.

App stopping mid-run (Samsung Galaxy users)?

Some watches aggressively kill background apps to save battery. To fix this, open the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone, go to Battery settings, and allow "Background Activity" for HapticZone.

Audio routing to phone not playing?

Make sure your phone is actively connected to your watch via Bluetooth, the HapticZone mobile companion app is installed, and your phone's Media Volume is turned up.

Not feeling any vibrations?

Wear OS automatically disables the haptic motor if your watch is in Do Not Disturb, Bedtime, or Theater Mode. Double-check that these are turned off while you train.
